New York Permit Test FAQs
How many questions are on the real New York permit test?
The New York Class D permit test contains 20 questions. Four questions concern road signs.
What score do I need to pass?
You must answer at least 14 of the 20 questions correctly. You must also correctly answer at least two of the four road-sign questions.
How much does the New York knowledge test cost?
The permit fee varies according to your exact age and where you live. For a Class D or DJ applicant aged 16 to 16½, the current total is $80, or $90 if the applicant lives in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District. Use the DMV fee chart for your exact amount.
Can I take the New York permit test online?
Applicants under 18 may be offered the option to complete the permit test online as part of the DMV application process. After passing, you must wait for DMV to review the test result and identity documents, then visit a DMV office to complete the permit transaction. Going to the office within the first three business days may require you to retake the test there.
What should I bring to the New York DMV office?
Bring a completed permit application, the required proofs of age, identity and New York residence, and payment for the applicable fee. The exact documents depend on whether you apply for a Standard, REAL ID or Enhanced permit. A parent or guardian must attend when the MV-45 identity or residence form is required.
What happens if I fail?
New York DMV does not state a standard waiting period for another in-office permit-test attempt on its current public permit page. Ask the testing office when you may retake it. Students testing through the monitored school-based online program may retake the test as many times as their school allows.
