New Mexico Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real New Mexico permit test?
New Mexico MVD’s current public guidance does not state the exact number of questions on the knowledge exam. Our comprehensive New Mexico mock test contains 28 questions.

What score do I need to pass?

You must score at least 70% on the New Mexico Class D knowledge test. On our 28-question mock test, that means answering at least 20 questions correctly.

How much does the New Mexico knowledge test cost?
New Mexico does not list a separate standard MVD knowledge-test charge. The instructional permit costs $10, although municipal or partner offices may charge additional service or testing fees.

Can I take the New Mexico permit test online?

No, not generally. The exam may be completed through an MVD office or an MVD-contracted driver-education school. Online MVD services allow some applicants to arrange testing through a driving school.

What should I bring to the New Mexico MVD office?
Teen applicants should bring proof of enrollment in or completion of an approved driver-education program. For a REAL ID permit, bring one proof of identification number, one proof of identity and age, and two proofs of New Mexico residency. A Standard permit requires proof of identity and age and two proofs of residency. A parent or guardian must attend and sign the application for an applicant under 18.

What happens if I fail?
You may retake the non-commercial knowledge test as soon as you are ready, including later the same day, but you may take it no more than twice in one week. After failing the written or road test three times, you must wait six months from the application date before testing again.

Are these practice tests based on the New Mexico Driver Manual?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study topics from the New Mexico Driver Manual, including traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving rules.
