Montana Permit Test FAQs
How many questions are on the real Montana permit test?
The Montana written test contains 33 multiple-choice questions covering traffic laws and safe-driving methods.
What score do I need to pass?
You must answer at least 27 of the 33 written-test questions correctly, which is an ~82% passing score.
How much does the Montana knowledge test cost?
Credential fees vary according to age and the period for which the credential is issued. Consult the current MVD licensing-fee table for the amount that applies to you.
Can I take the Montana permit test online?
No. Applicants are directed to schedule and take the written test at an MVD Driver License Exam Station.
What should I bring to the Montana MVD office?
Bring hard-copy documents proving your identity, authorized presence and Montana residency. You must also know your Social Security number so it can be verified. Applicants under 18 need consent from a parent, guardian or responsible adult before testing.
What happens if I fail?
Your Montana testing receipt allows three attempts within one year to pass all required examinations. Current public guidance does not state a universal waiting period between written-test attempts, so follow the instructions provided by the examiner. If you do not complete the licensing process within the year, you must reapply.
