Massachusetts Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real Massachusetts permit test?
The Massachusetts Class D learner’s-permit exam contains 25 multiple-choice questions.

What score do I need to pass?

You must answer at least 18 of the 25 questions correctly, which is a 72% passing score. You have 25 minutes to complete the exam.

How much does the Massachusetts knowledge test cost?
Each Massachusetts learner’s-permit examination attempt costs $30. If you fail and wish to retake it, you must pay another $30 examination fee through your myRMV profile.

Can I take the Massachusetts permit test online?

Yes. You must first complete the application process and visit an RMV Service Center so your identity documents and photograph can be processed. You can then choose to take the learner’s-permit exam online within 60 days of the Service Center visit. The same exam can also be taken in person.

What should I bring to the Massachusetts RMV office?
Bring the documents required for either a Standard or REAL ID permit, including proof of lawful presence and date of birth, proof of your Social Security status and proof of Massachusetts residency. A REAL ID application generally requires two proofs of Massachusetts residency. Applicants under 18 need the consent and signature of a parent or guardian.

What happens if I fail?
You may take the learner’s-permit exam again, but you must first use your myRMV profile to pay another $30 examination fee. Current RMV guidance does not state a universal waiting period between knowledge-test attempts.

Are these practice tests based on the Massachusetts Driver’s Manual?
