The Louisiana learner-permit knowledge test contains 40 questions covering traffic laws, traffic signs, signals and safe-driving practices.

What score do I need to pass?

You must score at least 80%. On a 40-question test, that means answering at least 32 questions correctly.

How much does the Louisiana knowledge test cost?
The learner’s permit costs $32.25, and some offices may charge an additional service fee. Driver-education provider charges may be separate.

Can I take the Louisiana permit test online?

No. First-time applicants must obtain a Temporary Instructional Permit before testing, and the knowledge test is administered through OMV or an approved driver-education provider.

What should I bring to the Louisiana OMV office?
Bring original documents proving your identity and Louisiana residency, verification of your Social Security number and any additional identification required by OMV. Applicants aged 17 or younger need a custodial parent or legal guardian to sign, together with identification and documentation proving custody or guardianship. When converting a TIP, bring your driver-education completion certificate. Photocopies are not accepted.

What happens if I fail?
There is no official OMV guidance. Ask your driver-education provider or OMV office when you may retest and whether an additional provider fee applies.
