How many questions are on the real Iowa permit test?
The Iowa knowledge examination contains 25 multiple-choice questions.

What score do I need to pass?

You need a score of at least 80%. On a 25-question practice test, that means answering at least 20 questions correctly.

How much does the Iowa knowledge test cost?
The Class C instruction permit costs $6.

Can I take the Iowa permit test online?

Applicants under 18 may be able to take the Iowa knowledge test online at home through the Skip the Trip program. A parent or guardian must apply to proctor the test, and the student must use an internet-connected computer rather than a phone or tablet. Some participating schools and agencies also administer the online test. Applicants may alternatively test at an Iowa DMV or participating county treasurer’s office.

What should I bring to the Iowa DOT office?
Bring a primary form of identification, proof of Iowa residency and proof of your Social Security number. Applicants under 18 also need written consent from a parent or guardian. Additional documentation may be required depending on the applicant’s circumstances.

What happens if I fail?
An applicant who fails a knowledge test may repeat it at the examiner’s discretion.
