The DC DMV test format depends on age. GRAD applicants ages 16–20 take a 30-question test, while standard applicants age 21 or older take a 25-question test.

What score do I need to pass?

For the GRAD test, aim for 24 correct answers out of 30. For the standard adult test, aim for 20 correct answers out of 25.

How much does the District Of Columbia knowledge test cost?
The knowledge test fee is $10 at a DC DMV service center. The learner permit fee is $20. Virtual testing and test-proctoring-center appointments cost more.

Can I take the District Of Columbia permit test online?

Yes. DC DMV offers virtual knowledge testing for standard and GRAD knowledge tests. An appointment is required for virtual testing or testing at a local Test Proctoring Center.

What should I bring to the District Of Columbia office?
Bring your completed application and documents proving identity and age, DC residency, Social Security number or proof of ineligibility, and parental approval if you are 16 or 17. DC DMV also requires vision screening, a knowledge test, a photograph, and applicable fees.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail the DC DMV knowledge test, you may retake it after waiting three full calendar days. If you fail six times within a 12-month period, you cannot take the seventh test until 12 months after the first failed test.

What happens after I pass?
If you pass the virtual test, you must visit a DC DMV Service Center within 14 business days with the required documents to obtain your learner permit or driver license.
