Colorado Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real Colorado permit test?
The Colorado driver knowledge test is commonly presented as a 25-question test. Use the full mock test to practise the same 25-question format.

What score do I need to pass?

You should aim for 20 correct answers out of 25, which is an 80% passing score.

How much does the Colorado knowledge test cost?
Colorado lists the REAL ID instruction permit fee as $19. If you take the @Home Driving Knowledge Test online, the first online attempt is listed as $6.50, including the $5 testing fee and $1.50 credit-card processing fee. Retests may cost more.

Can I take the Colorado permit test online?

Yes. Colorado offers the @Home Driving Knowledge Test. You can take it online using a desktop or laptop with a webcam, or you can take the test in-office or at a driving school.

What should I bring to the Colorado DMV office?
Colorado DMV says applicants should bring required identification documents, pass a vision exam, submit fingerprints, have a photo taken, and be prepared to pay applicable fees. If you passed the online test, bring the completion confirmation with you, either printed or electronic.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail and need a retest, Colorado DMV lists a $11.50 written retest fee. For the @Home test, Colorado says you can take the test as many times as needed, but only twice in one day.

Are these practice tests based on the Colorado Driver's Handbook?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study topics from the Colorado Driver Handbook: including traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving rules.

How to best use these practice tests

Follow these steps for the most effective study experience:

Number 1

Read the Colorado Driver Handbook

This is the official source of all rules you'll be tested on.

Number 2

Begin with shorter quizzes

Start with road signs, lane rules, and right-of-way. These build strong foundational knowledge.

Number 3

Move to full-length 25-question tests

These mimic the real exam format and help you get used to timing and pressure.

Number 4

After tests are scored, review the correct answers carefully

Understanding why an answer is correct improves retention.

Number 5

Retake tests until you consistently score above the passing threshold

Most successful test-takers aim for 85–90% on practice quizzes before taking the real test.
