North Dakota Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real North Dakota permit test?
The NDDOT Class D Rules of the Road knowledge test contains 25 questions plus a separate test on road signs.

What score do I need to pass?

You must answer at least 20 of the 25 questions correctly.

How much does the North Dakota knowledge test cost?
An in-person North Dakota knowledge-test attempt costs $5 and the learner's permit costs $15. If you take the official test online through KnowToDrive, each online attempt costs $10.

Can I take the North Dakota permit test online?

Yes. North Dakota offers its official Class D knowledge test online through KnowToDrive. North Dakota residents aged 14 or older may take it using a desktop or laptop with internet access, a keyboard, mouse and webcam. Applicants under 18 must register with a parent or guardian.

What should I bring to the North Dakota DOT office?
Bring proof of identity, date of birth and legal presence, proof of your North Dakota residential address and your Social Security number. Applicants under 18 also require approval and sponsorship from a parent, legal guardian or other authorized person.

What happens if I fail?
For an in-person knowledge test, only one attempt is allowed per day. If you fail the official online KnowToDrive test, you may try again after 24 hours. After five failed online attempts, you must wait one year before another online attempt, although you may still test at a Driver License office.

Are these practice tests based on the North Dakota State Driver Handbook?
