Minnesota Permit Test FAQs
How many questions are on the real Minnesota permit test?
The Minnesota written test contains 40 multiple-choice and true-or-false questions covering Minnesota traffic laws and road signs.
What score do I need to pass?
You must achieve a passing score of at least 32 correct answers, which is 80%.
How much does the Minnesota knowledge test cost?
The Minnesota Class D instruction permit costs $29.50. The first two written-test failures do not carry the state retesting charge, but the third and each subsequent test costs $10. Official third-party testing locations may charge their own testing or service fee.
Can I take the Minnesota permit test online?
No. Applicants may take the Class D written test at a DVS exam station or an authorized third-party testing location.
What should I bring to the Minnesota DVS office?
Complete the online pre-application no more than 30 days before your appointment and bring the required identity documents, your Social Security number if you are eligible for one, and payment for the permit fee. Applicants under 18 must also bring a Blue Card or Pink Card showing the required driver-education enrollment and obtain approval from a parent, guardian or another authorized adult.
What happens if I fail?
You may take only one Minnesota written test per day, so the earliest you can try again is another day. If you fail two consecutive written tests, a $10 fee applies to the third and each subsequent attempt. A new appointment may be required.
Are these practice tests based on the Minnesota Driver's Manual?
