Michigan Permit Test FAQs
How many questions are on the real Michigan permit test?
Michigan’s adult written knowledge examination 50 questions divided into two portions: an Operator test covering traffic laws and safe vehicle operation, and a separate road-sign test.
What score do I need to pass?
You must achieve a passing score of at least 80%. Both the Operator and road-sign portions must be passed.
How much does the Michigan knowledge test cost?
There is no fee to take the knowledge test at a Michigan Secretary of State office. Eligible adults taking it online pay a $6.50 convenience fee for each attempt. A Temporary Instruction Permit costs $25.
Can I take the Michigan permit test online?
Eligible Michigan residents aged 18 or older may take the official knowledge test online using a desktop or laptop computer with a keyboard, mouse and webcam. Applicants younger than 18 complete the required Segment 1 examination through an approved driver-education provider instead. The adult examination may also be taken at a Secretary of State office.
What should I bring to the Michigan DOS office?
Adult applicants should bring proof of their Social Security number or ineligibility, legal presence, identity and Michigan residency. They must also pass a vision test and pay the $25 Temporary Instruction Permit fee. Teen applicants need their Segment 1 completion certificate and must attend with a parent or guardian when applying for a Level 1 Learner’s License.
What happens if I fail?
If you fail an in-office knowledge examination, you must reschedule and return on a different day. Eligible adults testing online may make up to two attempts per calendar day, paying the $6.50 fee for each attempt. If you pass one online portion but fail the other, Michigan advises that you may visit a branch office to complete the full test without an additional testing fee.
