Maine Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real Maine permit test?
The Maine Class C knowledge test contains 30 questions covering traffic laws, driving skills, vehicle handling and highway signs.

What score do I need to pass?

You must score at least 80%. On a 30-question test, that means answering at least 24 questions correctly.

How much does the Maine knowledge test cost?
The Maine Class C permit examination fee is $35. This covers the written examination application; driver-education course charges are separate.

Can I take the Maine permit test online?

No. Applicants submit a learner’s-permit application and are scheduled for the written examination through the application process. Students enrolled in approved driver education may complete the required examination through their driver-education provider.

What should I bring to the Maine DMV office?
Applicants must submit a learner’s-permit application, the $35 fee, two forms of identification and proof of Maine residency. Applicants under 18 must provide a driver-education completion certificate, while applicants younger than 23 must provide a birth certificate. Copies may be mailed with the application, but original documents must be shown at the examination.

What happens if I fail?
Maine BMV’s current public guidance does not state a universal waiting period for retaking the Class C written test. Follow the instructions provided by the examiner or your approved driver-education school.
