Indiana Permit Test FAQs

How many questions are on the real Indiana permit test?
The Indiana knowledge examination contains 50 multiple-choice questions divided into two sections: 34 questions covering traffic laws, driving maneuvers and safe-driving practices, and 16 questions covering traffic signs.

What score do I need to pass?

You must pass both sections separately. You should answer at least 28 of the 34 traffic questions and at least 14 of the 16 sign questions correctly. Passing one section does not compensate for failing the other.

How much does the Indiana knowledge test cost?
Indiana does not list a separate standard knowledge-test fee. The learner’s-permit fee is $9.

Can I take the Indiana permit test online?

No. The official computer-based knowledge examination is taken at an Indiana BMV branch. You normally do not need an appointment, but you must arrive at least 30 minutes before the branch closes. An appointment is required if you need the exam read to you.

What should I bring to the Indiana BMV office?
Bring documents proving your identity, Social Security number, lawful status and Indiana residency. Two separate documents are normally required to prove Indiana residency. Applicants under 18 also need an adult to sign an Agreement of Financial Liability. Applicants aged 15 must provide a valid Certificate of Driver Education showing enrollment in approved behind-the-wheel training.

What happens if I fail?
If you fail the Indiana knowledge examination, you must wait until the next business day before trying again.

Are these practice tests based on the Indiana Driver's Manual?
Yes. These practice questions are designed to help you study topics from the Indiana Driver's Manual, including traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving rules.

What is in the practice permit test?
Our short tests consist of 10 questions and are perfect for quick refreshes when you only have a few minutes. Our full practice tests have 50 questions for which you'll need to correctly answer 40 to pass. All tests use the same question database, where the questions are selected at random from these categories:

How to best use these practice tests

Follow these steps for the most effective study experience:

Number 1

Read the Indiana Driver's Manual

This is the official source of all rules you'll be tested on.

Number 2

Begin with shorter quizzes

Start with road signs, lane rules, and right-of-way. These build strong foundational knowledge.

Number 3

Move to full-length 50-question tests

These use the same number of questions and passing threshold as the Indiana written exam and help you practice maintaining concentration throughout a full-length test.

Number 4

After tests are scored, review the correct answers carefully

Understanding why an answer is correct improves retention.

Number 5

Retake tests until you consistently score above the passing threshold

Retake the practice tests until you can consistently pass both Indiana sections, rather than relying on your combined overall score.
